AFRIGENE 2026: FIVE DAYS OF LEARNING, COLLABORATION AND GENOMICS

The Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the African Genomics Analysis Workshop (AFRIGENE 2026), from 10–14 August 2026 at the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan.

Organised by the African Genomics Network (AGN) in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, with support from the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE), the five-day workshop brought together early to senior career academics, postgraduate students from within and outside University of lbadan, other African countries and selected undergraduate students of Zoology for an intensive programme in genomics and bioinformatics.

Over the course of the workshop, participants moved from foundational concepts to practical applications, with sessions covering computational biology, Linux/UNIX for genomics, biodiversity and conservation genomics, sequence alignment and phylogenetics, comparative genomics and molecular evolution, computational biology and bioinformatics, protein docking, and applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in bioinformatics.

A particularly valuable part of the programme was its strong emphasis on hands-on learning, giving participants the opportunity to work with computational tools and approaches that are increasingly important to research in genomics, evolutionary biology and biodiversity conservation.

Zoology @ Ibadan appreciates African Genomics Network and the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution for supporting this important capacity-building initiative. We also thank the facilitators, organisers and volunteers whose time and expertise made the workshop possible.

To all the participants, congratulations on completing AFRIGENE 2026. We hope the knowledge, skills and connections developed during these five days will continue to contribute to your research and scientific journey.

The Department of Zoology remains committed to supporting opportunities that strengthen scientific training, collaboration and research capacity among the next generation of African scientists.
