Meet the DVC, RISP

Professor Bamgbose SAN, the newly appointed Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, in 1983 and was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1984. She obtained her Master of Law (LL.M) Degree from the same University of Lagos in 1990 and was the best graduating student in a class of about one hundred and five (105) students.
She started her working career as a State Counsel at the Ministry of Justice, Abeokuta, Ogun State in 1985 and rose to the position of Senior State Counsel in the Director of Public Prosecution Department in 1987. Professor Bamgbose started her academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in November 1987, rose through the rank and was promoted to the rank of full professor of Law in 2003 being the first homegrown Professor in the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan.
A teacher of teachers, having taught many who are, at present, Professors and Lecturers within the University of Ibadan, the Professor and Learned Silk, has produced many doctoral students, supervised over three hundred and fifty (350) students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is an external examiner to many institutions including the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife, University of Benin, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, University of Calabar, Osun State University, Igbinedon University, Okada and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria.
She has been a Visiting Lecturer at Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), Ago Iwoye, Nigeria, in 2000; Visiting Professor at Marquette University School of Law, Wisconsin, United States of America (Fall Semester 2001); Visiting Professor at Saint Louis University School of Law, Saint Louis, Missouri, United States of America (SPRING Semester 2008) and at the University of Lagos. Akoka, Lagos (2014 -2015).
She was the Chairperson of The Study Group on Death Penalty for the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee for Oyo State, Nigeria; Member of Nigeria's National Committee on the Reform of Discriminatory Laws against Women; Member of the Technical Working Committee of the NHRC/ Ford Foundation Project: “Fair Trial and the Right to Effective Participation in Governance: Independent Review of Evidence of Gross Violations of the Rights to Participate in Government and Fair Trial through the Election Petition Process in Nigeria”; Member: Panel of Experts to Review Administration of Criminal Justice Law and the Criminal Law of Ondo State, Nigeria.
Professor Bamgbose is the Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF); She is a Fellow of Salzburg Seminar Austria Session 339 (1996), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration; Member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum; Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT); Member, Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN); Member, West African Research Association (WARA); Member, West African Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA)
The New Deputy Vice -Chancellor RISP, has a strong interest in issues of law relating to women and children and has published over 100 (100) articles, books, and technical reports in the English Language with translation into other languages in both national and international outlets; some of which have been cited and used in national and foreign courts. She authored the book “Law and Practice on Disaster Issues” the first and major Nigerian publication to present legal materials from diverse fields of Law in a single volume on disaster issues. She has also co-authored the book “Criminal Law in Nigeria” a widely used textbook in most Law Faculties in Nigeria and Superior Courts in Nigeria. Her Inaugural Lecture in July in July 2010 titled “The Sentence, the Sentencer and the Sentenced: Towards Prison Reforms in Nigeria ” is presently the main resource and reference material in many Law Faculties where Criminology is taught and a useful resource in the reform of the correctional institutions in Nigeria.
A speaker at many international conferences and a widely traveled scholar, the Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria was the guest speaker at the Celebration of 100 years of Women in Law at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri, the USA on 24 November, 2008 where she delivered a paper on Privatization of Prisons. Also, she was the guest speaker at the 3rd Professor Jadesola Akande Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos, on 27 November, 2014 on the topic Re-Evaluating the Juvenile/Child Justice System in Nigeria and also at the 2nd Grace Foundation Lecture on May 16, 2014, where she delivered the paper on Child Trafficking.
At the University level, Professor Bamgbose is currently serving a second term as an Internal Member of the University of Ibadan Governing Council, representing Senate, a position held since 2015. She is a member of many committees of Senate and Council; currently, the Director of the Women’s Law Clinic (a specialised Law Clinic), at the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, Ibadan; served as the Dean at the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan between February 2009 and July 2014. She was the first female Head of Department in the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, serving two terms between December 1997-September 30, 1999 and April 2001- July 2003 and served as Sub-Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Nigeria – October 1996 –December 1997; Acting Warden, Queen Elizabeth 11 Hall, University of Ibadan. Nigeria. October – November 1995 and Assistant Hall Warden, Queen Elizabeth 11 Hall, University of Ibadan. Nigeria. July 1992 – March 1997. She is also an external member of the Governing Council, Chrisland University, Owode, Abeokuta, Nigeria.
On 24 September, 2018, Professor Bamgbose was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and thus became the first and presently the only Female Professor of Law in Nigeria to be conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Professor Bamgbose, a Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology is happily married to Honourable Justice Olatokunbo John Bamgbose of the Ogun State Judiciary and they are blessed with children and a grandchild.
The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RISP) succeeds Prof. Olanike K. Adeyemo, the pioneer Deputy Vice-Chancellor(RISP).
