UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN STUDENTS SHINES AT WOMEN IN DATA SCIENCE HACKATHON

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN STUDENTS SHINES AT WOWEN IN DATA SCIENCE HACKTHON

We have recorded another success again, in the just concluded Women in Data Science Datathon. A datathon is a data-focused Hackathon given a dataset and a limited amount of time, participants are challenged to use their creativity and data science skills to build, test, and explore solutions. In this year's competition, 203 teams participated. The challenge is to create a model that predicts the presence of oil palm plantations in satellite imagery. The dataset images are 3-meter spatial resolution, and each is labeled with whether an oil palm plantation appears in the image (0 for no plantation, 1 for any presence of a plantation). Two of our Masters students Ify Okoh of the department of statistics and Halimah Oladosu of the department of Computer Science, their team (Team X) came 3rd in the competition.

The two girls have been very consistent over the last 12 months in attending the Artificial Intelligence Saturday classes and have also benefited greatly from bootcamps and training organised by Data Science Nigeria.

Details of the competition can be found at https://www.widsconference.org/datathon.html and the link to the competition is also at https://www.kaggle.com/c/widsdatathon2019
